September/October 2018 Out of My Face

Hey. Hey There. How ya doin? Sooooo been MIA. Thought I'd try to get back to it with my most recent empties.

Here's what I've used up the last couple of months.

  • Suave Coconut Oil Infusion Damage Repair Conditioner
  • Creme of Nature Argan Oil Strength & Shine Leave-in Conditioner
  • One 'n Only Argan Oil Treatment
  • Serious Skincare A Force XR
  • Supreme Moisture Locking Natural Hand Cream
  • Supreme Cuticle Care Oil
  • philosophy 3-in-1 shower gel in Candy Cane
  • Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream
  • Skindinavia The Makeup Finishing Spray - Oil Control version
  • Covergirl Queen All Day Flawless Foundation in Mocha Q835
  • Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Skin Therapy Cleansing Oil
  • Jamaican Mango & Lime Jamaican Black Castor Oil in Peppermint
  • Tarte Maneater Mascara
  • Serious Skincare Mega Force
  • Serious Skincare A Wash
  • Nivea Cocoa Butter Body Cream
  • Elemis Pro Collagen Cleansing Balm
  • Bliss Lemon & Sage Hand Cream
  • Clark's Botanicals Intense Radiance Mask
  • Origins Out of Trouble Mask
  • Schwarzkopf Smooth 'n Shine Conditioning Polisher
  • Revlon Kiss Exfoliating Balm
I enjoyed all these empties with the exception of the Nivea Cocoa Butter Body Cream. I was excited to try this. It's inexpensive and I've tried other lotions from Nivea that I've liked. The consistency is nice and smooth but it was not moisturizing at all. To use it up, I layered Vaseline's Cocoa Radiant Body Gel Oil after I applied the body cream. I say skip this and pick up their Essentially Enriched Body Lotion.

Next up will be my favorites of September and October!

  • Kate Somerville ExfoliKate
  • One 'n Only Argan Oil Hydrating Mask
  • One 'n Only Argan Oil Treatment
  • Bare Minerals Mineralixirs Facial Cleansing Oil
  • COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner
The iS Clinical Copper Firming Mist is a new product to me.This was given to me by a friend to try. At first I didn't think it was doing anything. The more I used it, the more I enjoyed. Not sure if it helped with firming but it did help control the oil on my face and foundation application. I mainly used it in the morning after toner. It's funny I thought that the spray was clogged because nothing was coming out. Then I was like uhhh hello you finished it LOL!!! I haven't decided yet if I will purchase a bottle.

Two other newbies to the list but not to me are the KeraCare Hydrating Detangling Shampoo and Humecto Creme Conditioner. This shampoo and conditioner I used years ago. I loved them and then got side tracked by other products. The woes of a product junkie. I decided to use them again when my hairdresser told me of a sale that JcPenney was having and I fell in love with these two products all over again. I haven't repurchased them yet but I will. I can tell a difference in my hair since I ran out. These two products helped keep my hair soft, hydrated and manageable.

The Bare Minerals Mineralixirs Facial Cleansing Oil is another new product to the list. It's a typical cleansing oil and I did like it. A friend gave this to me. I'm not sure if they still make it. It got all my makeup off and it rinsed well. Some cleansing oils I feel like you have to rinse FOREVER to get off. I didn't have to do that with this one.

And lastly let's talk about the COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner. When I first started using this I wasn't wowed by it and didn't think much of it. This is another product I grew to enjoy the more  I used. I was going to mention it in a top 5 post but kept forgetting. Here's the product description:
"COSRX AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner is an exfoliating fluid that effectively eliminates flakes and dull skin cells while preventing blackheads and whiteheads from forming. Infused with natural acne-fighting acids, AHA/BHA Clarifying Treatment Toner controls excess oil and sebum while nourishing and hydrating depleted skin with essential vitamins.
It does just that! This is an excellent toner and I feel it was a game changer for my oily acne prone skin. I also love how it makes my skin feel soft and supple too. Even though I have oily skin, it can become dehydrated so the right products are key for my skin. It's available at Ulta but you can find it cheaper on Amazon. I have some other toners to get through but I am definitely going to repurchase this toner.

And DONE!

I will definitely continuing doing these posts in 2018. I would like do them monthly but I don't really use that much up in a month. So we shall see how often these get posted.

September 2017 Top 5

Hello. Hey. How ya doing? No rambling let's just get to it!

MAC Girls Mischief Minx Palette

A friend of mine mentioned picking this palette up from Ulta and I was curious. So of course I had to look it up. I liked what I saw and decided to give it a go. Well I ended up really liking it. The value of the palette is really good, there are a nice selection of shades and the highlighter is the palette is stunning. I've looked up the other MAC Girls palettes and I have ordered another one.

Fromm Diane Wide Tooth Shampoo Comb

Along with the MAC palette, my friend picked up two combs and she said they were good. I'm always on the lookout for a good comb for this thick hair of mine. This comb is a good one and it's inexpensive at Ulta. I used it on my dry hair only. I have another comb I use when my hair is wet. It glided through my hair and I didn't have a lot of hair stuck in the comb after combing my hair. So score! I may grab another one.

Mally Shadow Sticks

As I've been going through my makeup, I have been paying extra attention to what I'm actually reaching for. When it comes to shadows sticks, Mally's are the ones for me. She has a wide variety of colors, they last on my oily lids and they hold up nicely including the packaging. I have some other in similar packaging and the caps have cracked. So I'm more than likely going to toss the other shadow sticks and pencils I have unless the color is something I don't have from Mally and stick to purchasing hers from here on out.

Bobbi Brown Gel Liner

I have been without a black liquid liner for a while now. I've tried some inexpensive ones that were terrible! Then I ordered two of the LORAC ones during Ulta's 21 Days of Beauty. While I was waiting on my order, I reached of my Bobbi Brown Black Ink Gel Liner. I forgot how much I like look of gel liner and how easy Bobbi Brown Gel Liners are to apply. Also it lasts all day and I mean ALL DAY! I've had this jar for a while. So I know I'm due for a new one which I will pick up soon. It's always fun rediscovering old favorites.

tarte Tartelette Palette

I've had this palette for while but hadn't reached for it lately. So it was time to decide if it was staying in my stash or if it was going. Well I can say it's staying. It's a fantastic matte eyeshadow palette. It's good on it's own and a good companion palette if you need some other matte eyeshadows to complete a look. I may travel with this later on this month. I keep saying I need to designate my travel makeup, so that when it's time to pack I grab those items and keep it moving. Now I'm really leaning towards getting the Tartlette in Bloom palette and there's supposed to be another palette called Toast with warmer shades coming out soon. Oye vey lol!!!

Now for a surprise palette and a random bonus.

Urban Decay Rollergirl Palette

I was going through some empty makeup bags I had set aside for gift giving. I got tired of looking at them and they were not being used for gift giving. So they needed to go. I picked up one and something was in it. Inside was the Urban Decay Rollergirl Palette!!!!!! I had put it aside to give to someone since I really hadn't used it. I had thought out about this palette recently due to the packaging being special with a black girl on it. I was bummed I didn't have it anymore and then I find it! I started using it and said to myself why did I want to give this away again? It has nice neutral shades including Darkhorse which is one of my favorite Urban Decay eyeshadows and a pop of pink. The pink scared me when I first got this palette. I used it with a pink/purple eyeshadow stick and the look was so pretty! So finding this what a good surprise for the month!

And a random bonus that keeps with my minty things obsessions and doesn't really need an explanation....

ALTOIDS!!!!! I've been eating these thangs two at a time!

And there you have it. September was a simple month. Let's see what October brings.

Jan/Feb 2017 Out of My Face

Helllllloooo and happy March! I can't believe it's March already! Life is still in progress but things are kind of getting back to normal. I have a few posts that I want to get up. So let start with some empties shall we? We shall!

Here is what I've used up in January and February:
  • Vaseline Cocoa Butter
  • One n Only Argan Oil
  • philosophy Falling in Love Spray Fragrance 4oz
  • Proclaim Cocoa & Shea Butter Hand & Body Lotion 3oz
  • Silk Elements Shea Butter with Olive Oil Hand Cream 3oz
  • Fresh Cream Glazed Body Souffle 16 oz
  • Duri Rejuvacote
  • Serious Skincare Ultra-Mare Pure Marine Serum Concentrate
  • Skindinavia The Makeup Finishing Spray Oil Control
  • Skinfix Ultra Rich Hand Cream
  • Beaute Essentielle Antioxidant Facial Wipes in Pomegranate Acai
  • Serious Skincare Pure Pep Fading Fluid
  • Serious Skincare Dermal Crepe Resist Eye Cream
  • philosophy Take a Deep Breath SPF 30 Oil-Free Oxygen Moisturizer
  • Wen Fall Ginger Pumpkin Treatment Oil
  • Ween Fall Ginger Pumpkin Replenishing Treatment Mist
I came across the Beaute Essentielle Antioxidant Facial Wipes in Pomegranate Acai at TJ Maxx. They were $3.99 for 60 wipes. At first I thought they were just ok. The more I used them, the more I grew to like them. They are a nice size to remove makeup. They're not harsh feeling and nicely saturated. I also picked up another version that's next on my list to use. There were a TON of different facial wipes at the one TJ Maxx store I went to and the prices were very good compared to the drugstore, Ulta, etc. If you need to stock up on some wipes, I say check TJ Maxx or Marshalls. I think the philosophy Take a Deep Breath Moisturizer is a good one for the daytime. It didn't interfere with my makeup and it didn't make my skin extra oily. I would definitely repurchase it. I've purchased "fancy" balms, butters and what not but when I went back to using Vaseline Cocoa Butter on my feet, back and other places that needed a little extra attention, I said to myself yep I'm sticking with this. It gets the job done and you can't beat the price. Not too shabby these last two months in trying to use stuff up. I lost my mind in February and picked up a bunch of stuff here and there. So yea I have MORE stuff to try and use up. Oy vey lol!

Let's see what I use up next!

October 2015 Yays! & Boos!

And we have another post today! Woohoo!

Here are the products that took me by surprise this month, along with some fail products.

Yays!

Wen Nourishing Mousse in Fig

Me? Use a mousse? No way! I think back in the day I used a random mousse from the drugstore to scrunch my hair. Bad idea lol! I heard that the Wen mousse was coming out in Tea and Fig in September. You know Wen's Tea Tree and Fig are two of my favorites. During the presentation Chaz Dean was saying how different it is from traditional mousse and it's treatment based. I was curious and said why not. The Fig mousse was on advance order. So I ordered and waited. When I got my shipping notice, I was like ok let's see what's what. I've used the mousse when I air dried my hair and with the blow dryer. I can't explain it but if gave my hair some extra oomph! It made my hair really smooth and soft!

Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid

I have another beauty pusha lol! I follow Felicia of ThisThatBeauty on Instagram and Twitter. I recently started following her on Snapchat and she is er'thang! She is my big sister in my head. She's 40 and does not look it at ALL and she's just super cool. Skincare is one of her big things. She has a series on her blog that's pretty in depth on how to get rid of dark spots. She snaps her skincare routine and in one of her snaps she RAVED about this product. Y'all know it don't take much for me to try something. When I ordered there was a promo on the trail size for $9 and free shipping. So I ordered it and the Resist cleanser. I've been using it morning and night and I can tell a difference in my skin. It's a lot smoother and brighter. Since it has Salicylic Acid, it has helped with my breakouts. I have already ordered a full size. I've been eyeing various items from Paula's Choice due to reviews I've heard and read. I've been somewhat leery since she does review products and has her own line. My first introduction to Paula was through her book "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me". I checked it out from the library YEARS ago. I didn't read the whole thing since it was hella thick. I wasn't impressed because I felt that she pretty much slammed a lot of products. I wrote a review on Amazon and it's probably my least liked review which tickles me for some reason. There may be some comments on it by now lol! I haven't bothered looking. You know how people on the Internet can be. Anywho I'm glad I reserved judgment and picked up this product. I've picked up samples of some other products. There may be some more Paula's Choice items in my future. If you're interested in ordering and saving $10 off your order, let me know.

Serious Skincare Double-Size Creamerum Evolve PLUS Evolve Eye

This was Today's Special on HSN. Lord knows that I did not need any more skin care but I ordered it anyway. The creamerum is a cream and serum in one. I instantly was surprised by the Evolve Eye. I've tried a lot of eye creams and I think this is one of the best ones I've tried. It absorbs into the skin so nicely but it's not heavy or greasy. It doesn't interfere with my eye makeup on under eye concealer and I feel that I've need less concealer under my eyes as well. The Creamerum Evolve I've tried before. I was undecided on it when I first tried it. So I sent it back. This deal was so good with the Evolve Eye included, I said ok let's give it one more try. It's light and also absorbs into the skin nicely. I've used it on its own, with the L'Oreal Youth Code Texture Perfector Serum and other moisturizers and it has worked well with other products. At night I have be using it more so like a night cream. I do feel like my skin is smoother, brighter, nicely hydrated and has helped with dark spots from breakouts. It doesn't interfere with my face makeup when I use it during the day. I think everything goes on a lot easier with it. I'm glad I signed up for auto ship.

Harmon Face Values Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes

This was a random purchase from Bed, Bath & Beyond. These are comparable to the Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes. I think these were $3.99 which is a great price. I think the Neutrogena ones were $4.99 at Bed, Bath & Beyond which is the cheapest I've seen it in any store. I really enjoyed using the Harmon ones. What shocked me the most was that each towelette I used was nicely saturated. You know how sometimes you run into a wipe or two that is somewhat dry? I have not had that problem with these. I am definitely going to repurchase another pack or two.

Boos!

Murad Clarifying Toner

I've been getting facials at Massage Envy and they use Murad products. Of course they encourage you to use the products to help maintain your skin. The lady I've been seeing is nice and not overly pushy but it's kind of getting on my nerves. I've tried 3 products and they are pricey. The most recent product I've tried is the Clarifying Toner. I ordered it from Ulta. I don't have sensitive skin and don't mind the tingly sensation from a toner. This joker burns! When I first used it I was like oh oh oohhhhhh! The sensation lasted for a good while too. It did make my skin feel soft after using it but this joker is  $24 and I feel that I've gotten better results from the Neutrogena Oil Eliminating Astringent that I have repurchased multiple times or with Dickinson's Witch Hazel. So back to Ulta this went and that's why it's not pictured above.

Paula's Choice Resist Perfectly Balanced Foaming Cleanser

I'm undecided on this product. I don't hate it but I'm not overly wowed by it. It does get my face clean and it doesn't feel stripped. It's a foaming cleanser and I've mentioned before that I'm not a fan of foaming cleanser. I didn't realize it was a foaming cleanser until after I ordered it. I've use it twice a day and it gets the job done. I'm going to continue using it. Maybe my feelings will change. I want to try her Skin Balancing cleanser but I'm trying to be good and use what I have on hand now. Let's see if it holds.

NYX Proof It! Waterproof Eye Shadow Primer

My eyeshadow primer woes continue. I was poking around on Ulta's website when there was a NYX promo going on. I looked at the reviews and said why not. I like the consistency and how tacky it got when it set. So I thought maybe this would do the trick and get my shadows to stay in place. Yea well not so much! I tried it on its own and various shadows sticks along with a powder shadow. Oh well it was inexpensive. I'm at the point now where I want to get rid of every eyeshadow I own. I even tried previous holy grail primers and the same thing! Something has got to give.

Laura Mercier Sleek & Chic Palette

I ordered this palette from Nordstrom when they were price matching it at 10% off. I really enjoy the two previous palettes. So I excited to get this one. This one only have 3 repeat shadows. So that's not too bad. I played around with it and I just wasn't moved by it. Plus I feel like the shimmery shades aren't all that pigmented. I kept going back in a few shades multiple times to build up color on my eye lid. I don't have this problem with her other two palettes. So back it went.

And there you have it! Let's see what shenanigans take place next month.

I HATE Going to the Hairdresser!!!

(Courtesy of Microsoft)

Today was the day of my much needed hair appointment.  I was excited too.  I had tweeted about it early in the week and this morning.  So I head out, made a couple of stops along the way and then headed to my appointment.  I arrive on time as usual.  I walk in and there are a lot of people about.  I walk in my hairdresser's area which is in a separate room.  There was already one lady in her chair, someone under the dryer and she was at the shampoo bowl with another later.  Annoyance starts to set it.  So I sit down, make small talk and wait and wait.  I hop in her chair so that she can prep me.  This was only a few minutes and I'm back waiting again.  It was over an HOUR before she did anything with my hair.  I was so tempted to walk out!  When I got in her chair she told me how she got behind due another client and what really needed to be done to her hair. Then she was like she needs an assistant and how she hires people but they don't want to work.  I'on know what to tell you!  Then I had to wait on her AGAIN to actual style my damn hair!  I was too through.  My situation could have be avoided if she would have just called me.  I live about 10-12 minutes away from her shop.  It wouldn't have been a hardship for me to either come later in the day or reschedule the appointment.  When I called her earlier in the week to make my appointment, I said what's the best time for YOU, NOT where you can squeeze me in.  Because from jump I already know what the deal is so I'm giving YOU the chance to be realistic.  Well that shit didn't work!  One of the ladies who was in there before me told my hairdresser that she needed to leave at 11:30.  She had to be some where at 12 and of course my hairdresser was like ok and that she would be done by then.  My hairdresser was rinsing my hair and the lady came in and was like I have to go.  Old girl took her own rollers out her hair and was OUT!  I'm not mad at her one bit!

This is the main reason why I hate going to get my hair done.  No one wants to be sitting in a salon all day getting their hair done.  Well at least I don't.  Then she was like "I wish you would come every two weeks".  I'm thinking hayle to the naw!  If you can get me in and out then cool.  But I know this isn't the case.  My time just like yours is valuable.  I don't what to spend a Saturday or whatever day in your salon hours upon end.  Not to mention cost is a factor.  It's not cheap to get your hair done.  Heck I'd rather spend that money on quality products that work for my hair and only see YOU when I really need to.  Not to mention having the flexibility to do my hair when I need to and not waiting on YOU!  I was in there almost 4 hours!  I've heard other horror stories where ladies have been in the salon like 6, 8 and 10 hours!  That's a doggone work day!  I had other errands and such I wanted to do today.  But now I'm so wiped.  I was starving when I left.  I went to get some food and high tailed in home!  So yea I'll see you when I see you hmph!

My Hair

(Courtesy of Microsoft)

Ok soooooo...

I have a love/hate relationship with my hair.  The hate part comes more so when it's time for me to get it done since by this point it is super thick.  Guess I should back up and say that my hair is relaxed and it's thick.  Yes I'm probably one of the five black women that still relaxes their hair.  I'm not there yet on the natural train.  Maybe I'll get there some time soon, then again maybe not.  I'm not knocking it by any means but for right now it's not the option for me.  As I've stated numerous times I'm product  junkie.  Hair products are not excluded.  The majority of the items I've used probably since I graduated college and got a "real job" would be considered "high end" with a few drugstore items thrown in here and there.  I've used Keracare for a good while.  I jumped to Ojon, Carol's Daughter and now I'm using WEN.  The main "issue" I have with my hair is that I use too much heat.  I can't find a happy medium when it comes to styling my hair on a daily basis.  The flat iron is the culprit but I don't know what else to do with my hair.  I hate rollers with a passion.  I don't like sleeping with them and 99.999999% I don't like how my hair looks when I take them out and attempt to style my hair.  My hair is long enough that I can put in a ponytail but I don't want to that everyday.  So what am I supposed to do?  I joke often that I'm going to karate chop all my hair off.  Short hair is cool but then you deal with the whole growing back process and when you have thick hair you HAVE to keep it up or you'll look crazy!  This go 'round is the longest time I've gone between touch ups which is ten weeks and it ain't pretty lol!  It's not bad bad just reaaaalllly thick!! When I do see my hair dresser she's probably gonna talk about me...ha!  When I do see her I'm going to be like look, real talk what am I supposed to do with this hair!?!

Product Junkie Files: Informal Project 10 Pan

So I've slipped on my beauty no buy *head palm* d'oh!!  Buuuuut I said for each day I mess up is an additional day tacked on to my no buy.  So let's see how this goes #badjen.  In more happy news I've used up quite a few products in the last few weeks! *fist pump*  The products were hair care and skin care products.  Wish I could say they were makeup products lol!  Oh well lol!

I used up my Ojon Restorative Hair treatment.  I've had this jar I swear for like three years!  You're only supposed to use it once a week and the jar is a pretty decent size.

Another hair product that I have used up is the Ashea Shea Butter Pomade.  I started using this when my hair dresser recommended it to me a few years ago.  I looooove it!  Kind of obessesed with Shea Butter products.  I use this on my hair daily when I style it in the morning.

I used up quite a few Carol's Daughter products.  I used up the Lemon Ginger Mint Manicure, the Khoret Amen Hair Oil, Sugar Dipped Vanilla Shower Gel and Body Cream.  The hair oil used to be available in an 8 oz bottle.  Now it's available in a 2 oz bottle that comes in a set with a hair smoothie in the same scent.  It was the 8 oz bottle that I finally used up.  It took foooooooorever!

I used up the Exuviance Purifying Cleansing Gel.  I got suckered into this when I went to Ulta to repurchase Bare Minerals Purifying Facial Cleanser.  In January Ulta had a skin care event going on and a rep for the brand was in the store and pretty much told me the Bare Minerals face wash was trash and that Exuviance was soooooo great since it was created by dermatologists.  Well whopdedooooo! I kinda got pissed because, one I hate pushy ass sales reps and two it's a product that has worked well for me.  But like a big dummy I got what she was pushing.  She threw a deluxe sample of their facial mask to try out which is just ok to me.   The cleansing gel did cleanse my face along with removing my makeup but I just wasn't wowed by it and I didn't see any vast changes to my skin.  I had a small amount of the Bare Minerals cleanser left and went back and forth between the two until I used it up.  Bare Minerals is better hands down!  At least for me it is.  So I will not be repurchasing this the cleansing gel!  I already have a bottle of the Bare Minerals one ret to go!

Another skin care product I've used up in the Bare Minerals Purely Nourishing Cream for Dry Skin. Let me first say that I do not have dry skin!  I had been using the same moisturizer for combination skin which I love.  However with this wacky winter my skin needed something a little more.  I had a same of the Perricone Face Finishing Moisturizer that surprisingly I really liked and was tempted to get the full size once I used up the sample.  It's expensive though.  The regular size jar is $69.  Then I was like well let me try the Bare Minerals one for dry skin since I like the other products I had been using.  Also it's less than $30.  I've been using it since December twice a day and just now finishing the jar.  I probably will go back the the combination skin one once the weather warms up.  I may get another jar and use it as my night cream.  We shall see.

So progress is being made.  Woohoo!!!   Hopefully I'll report back soon on some other items!

Confessions of a produt junkie....

If you haven't gathered from a few of my blog posts I like trying out different things *insert sheepish grin* lol!  Not sure where I get it from but hey it is what it is.  It kind of happens in spurts.  Then I'm like ok kid time to pump your brakes.  Like right now I'm on this hair products kick.  Back in the day (circa high school and college) I would use drug store products and/or something my hairdresser would recommend.  Fast forward to 2008/2009 I started dabbling in products that were considered "high end".

Lately I've gone back and forth between Carol's Daughter and Ojon products.  I have various products from these two lines.  I've been skeptical of WEN for the longest time but received a sample size that I finally used.  So of course the product junkie component of my brain was like hmmmmm....So now I have what I have and it does get used.  However when I look at what it under my bathroom sink I'm like -_-  Now I'm trying to pinpoint what my daily and weekly product regime is going to consist of.  But I'm sure something else will come out and it will get my attention and my money.  As you can see #thestruggleisreal lol!!!
